FCI Publish Guidance on COVID-19 Coding for General Practice

Over the past few weeks, the Faculty of Clinical Informatics has been working on developing clear advice on COVID-19 clinical coding for General Practice across the four nations. This work has drawn on the more comprehensive set of advice recently published by PRSB in collaboration with NHSD and others that looks at ALL of the COVID-19 related SNOMED CT content to date.

The Faculty advice has now been published and is available to view and download here:  https://facultyofclinicalinformatics.org.uk/coding-advice

The aim of this advice is to provide practical guidance to General Practitioners and practice staff to facilitate the recording of essential information relating to COVID-19 disease and the SARS-CoV-2 virus.  It focuses on a short list of SNOMED CT concepts from all of those which will be available to GP systems once the April UK SNOMED CT release is deployed. The English and Scottish advice is available now and separate but related advice sheets for Wales and Northern Ireland will be published shortly, reflecting the different systems and coding schemes in use. Advice will continue to be updated as things evolve.

Please share the link with your networks as appropriate. We would welcome any feedback on the guidance, in particular anything which is not accurate, gaps or where you feel further guidance could be useful.

Following on from this, the Faculty will be hosting a webinar entitled COVID-19 Coding for General Practice, which will be taking place next Thursday 23 April, 12.30 to 1.30pm.

If you would like to attend the webinar, please contact info@fci.org.uk and we will send you an invite. If you are unable to attend, the webinar will also be uploaded to the Faculty YouTube channel to view afterwards. Visit our site for more information about Faculty webinars.

The Faculty would like to give our thanks to John Williams, Ian Thompson, Julian Costello, Michael McKenna and John Robinson for their hard work on this advice.
